kettle

The anarchists, the police seemed to feel, were such an imminent danger to society that they needed to be 'kettled' — in other words, to have three police vans crawling along blocking their left-hand side, and a tight line of police one behind another on their right-hand-side, to make sure there was no possibility of break-out.

I've seen 'kettling' done even more intensively than this, at a recent Smash EDO protest in Brighton, for example, where the police were lined along the front and back of the group as well as down the sides, and I (walking my kid home from school) was warned to get out of the way as if it was an advancing army, rather than just 50-60 protesters. This small group in the 'kettle' was as resentful as you would expect.

Well, all four marches made it to the Bank of England - only to be blocked in by police in what's apparently called a 'kettle'. Nobody's being allowed out of the area in scenes reminiscent of Oxford Circus in 2001.

exit guide

After a multi-state investigation, four network members—“exit guides,” they call themselves—have been arrested and charged with helping 58-year-old John Celmer of Cumming commit suicide last June.

e-discovery

Many of the lessons learned from the increased use of electronic evidence in civil litigation–“e-discovery,” in the parlance of litigators–may be applied to the burgeoning use of social-networking sites to gather evidence in criminal cases.

AFPAK

In the two-front war that Washington is now calling “AFPAK,” there’s more head-scratching going on than is immediately visible. Yes, President Barack Obama last week approved a Pentagon request to send 17,000 more troops to Afghanistan. But at the same time, he has ordered a strategy review to make sure the U.S. isn’t marching blindly into what historians call “the graveyard of empires.”

Nicknamed the "emergency scam" or "grandparent scam," the fraud involves crooks phoning elderly people under the guise of one of their grandchildren. The crook persuades grandparent to send money but not tell other relatives.
—Jon Willing, "My dearest one, you've been scammed," The Ottawa Sun. January 27, 2009
